The WA Tobacco Action Plan 2007-2011 (WA TAP) (PDF 413KB) sets a framework for the prevention and reduction of tobacco related harm in Western Australia. It provides direction for the implementation of a variety of tobacco control initiatives and supports the development and strengthening of partnerships to reduce tobacco related harm in WA.
The WA TAP has been developed in response to key action areas of the National Tobacco Strategy 2004-2009 (NTS) (PDF) and the Western Australian Health Promotion Strategic Framework 2007-2011 (WA HPSF) (PDF).
In order to achieve it’s goal of improving the health of Western Australians by reducing the harm caused by tobacco, the WA TAP aims to:
- Prevent the uptake of smoking.
- Reduce the number of people using tobacco.
- Reduce exposure to tobacco and the harm it causes
WA TAP addresses its objectives through a range of recommended activities across four key action areas:
- Regulation
- Community Education
- Cessation Services and Treatment
- Research and Evaluation
Priority population groups have disproportionate rates in relation to population numbers, tobacco use, tobacco related morbidity or mortality or exposure to tobacco smoke. The priority populations outlined in WA TAP include:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
- People from culturally and linguistic diverse backgrounds
- People with mental illness
- Offenders and detainees
- Young people
- Parents and carers of children
- Pregnant women
- People living in rural and remote locations
- People at high risk of or with chronic diseases
- People living in low socioeconomic circumstances
